The Big Asthmatic Kitty Post

Tuesday, June 29, 2010

Hiya Fella’s,

I wanted to tell you about this awesome label called Asthmatic Kitty. It’s Mr. Sufjans Stevens’ very own indie record label and they have signed a lot of (mostly) awesome bands with styles from hip hop to sweet indiepop and so on. There are a lot of free songs on their website and I’ll post some here but there’s a lot more to discover (but don’t get hooked because you should have time enough to check out our blog too of course :) )

1. First things first: The great Sufjan himself of course (someone I shouldn’t introduce)! From his first album A Sun Came, here comes Jason, a great song that’s a little bit edgier, harder than his later work. Here’s the link.

Sufjan Stevens – Jason

2. Don’t know what to say about this guy, he’s called Jookabox and he’s eclectic, crazy, cool, … as hell. His music is a mix of soul, hip hop, indie, pop, rock and so on but we don’t care as long as he makes great shit… and that friends, is what he does. So here are two tracks for you to enjoy.

Jookabox – The Girl Ain’t Preggers

Jookabox – You Cried Me

3. This is music your grandma could listen to too, and I don’t mean this in a bad way. It’ sweet, it’s naïve, it’s produced by Sufjan and it’s a bit lithurgical and it’s called The Welcome Wagon. I know this all seems a little weird but they have some nice songs. Check it out and see if you like it or not…

Welcome Wagon – Sold! To The Nice Rich Man!

4. This is a little bit different too: Osso is a modernist string quartet that starred in the song Diamonds For Sierra Leone from Kanye – yo, imma let you finish, but… – West and worked together with other artists like: The National, Jay-Z, The Polyphonic Spree,… . Last year they reworked Sufjan’s second album called: Enjoy Your Rabbit, which was filled with weird electronical instrumental pieces of art… This is a song that was on the rework from that album. For your consideration:

Osso – Run Rabbit Run

5. DM Stith is also really cool. It’s darker and more melancholic than the links above but it’s still great music, I like it the most when I come home from an awesome party and I just want to chill out and listen to something beautiful , but you can listen to it on other ocasions too of course :)  . Here’s a link to one of his songs:

DM Stith – BMB

6. And last but not least, something funny to dance on from a guy called Rafter. I only recently discovered this and I have to say if I would hear this on the dancefloor my feet wouldn’t stop moving. So here you are:

Rafter – Fruit (remix)

Like I said there’s a lot more to discover but this should keep give you a nice impression of what Astmatic Kitty is.

Enjoy,

I will give you some nice tunes, you should know. Here we go:

Fake Blood – I Think I Like It

A very Poppy tune from Fake Blood, not bad at all.

Huoratron – Alphabet City

Flipping beats and blips make this song awesome!

Crookers Feat. Kelis – No Security

Crookers go dubsteppish together with a rapping Kelis. We think it’s nothing special but probably another big hit.

Grum – Heartbeats (Joe & Will Ask? Remix)

A great remix from an even greater track! Disco-style booty-shaking. Get the original Here.

Chromeo – Night by Night (Siriusmo remix)

Siriusmo remixed the new single from Chromeo and we have to say: “great job dude”.

Au Revoir Simone – Another Likely Story (Neon Indian remix)

After the Aeroplane remix we gave you, here’s another remix from Another Likely Story. If you like psychedellic electronics, check out this song!

The XX – Crystalised (Rory Phillips Mix)

The big XX hit Crystalised is now really dancy thanks to Rory Phillips!

Fuck Buttons – The Lisbon Maru

Electronic post-rock, you know it’s awesome…

Enjoy these tunes and your weekend

Something Everybody Can Enjoy

Sunday, February 22, 2009

Winter Thaw – Shigeto
A bit minimal, a bit alternative, a great beat with some fizzeling sounds.

Rockerman (Lee Mortimer Remix) -Foamo
A funky electro track remixed bij Lee Mortimer.

Upekah – Son.Sine
Some lovely minimal the way we like it!

Here’s Looking At You, Kid – The Gaslight Anthem
A great rocky track from a very promising band!

On The Motorway – Metronomy
A kick-ass song with some crazy synths, something 2 dance 2.

Bohemian Sunset – Jazzanova
Loungy and relaxed, that’s what jazzanova is all about.

Ursulan Uni – Paavoharju
Some Folk influences mixed with a triphop beat.

A Tribe Called Quest – Verses From The Abstract
Track from a great Hip-Hop group!

Sesquipedalia – BLÆRG
One of the weirdest songs I ever heard. I guess some electronic, drum ‘n bass with rock’n roll drums, indie guitars, a breakbeat construction, electro synths and sounds and some hiphop beats mixed with a crazy other unclassified beat. Enjoy if it’s possible for you. I did the first 5 minutes :p

The Sin Crusade – The International Noise Conspiracy
Great track from TINC! Sounds a bit like The Fratellis, only better!

The Fall Of Troy – Semi-Fiction
We promised someting for everybody so here’s some (post-)Hardcore. This is a heavy band I like from time to time.

My My – Everybody’s Talkin
Lovely lounge track with some jazzy influences

Nightmares On Wax – 195Lbs
The Last song for today: Some nice trip-hop!

Enjoy These Tunes!
