I have been asked by the Rusty Gods to give a little introduction to the record label Ninja Tune. This label, the name ‘ninjatune’ is sometimes used as a genre, is well known for a creative flow in the contemporain music scene. In this article I will try to introduce the readers into the label, the artists and the running projects.
Ninja Tune started out as a label in the early nineties. It was a collaboration between DJ’s Matt Black and Johathan More. They are as the group Coldcut [hip-hop]. The label is located in London. The goal of Ninja Tune was – and is still – to sign artists or groups with an ecclectic nature. The genre of most signed groups varies from hip-hop to nu-jazz, bass, ambient, chill-out. In short, every music that contains electronic music is suitable for Black & More. Nevertheless, there are even bands that mix up electronic with classical elements. Some artists are signed in a sub-label (like Big Dada, Ninja Tuna, …) that specialises in one separate genre
Coldcut – True Skool
I will try to give a short introduction to some well known artists that are signed to the label (or a sub-label):
Amon Tobin [electronic] is a Brazilian DJ and considered as one of the most innovative artists in the dj-scene. He frequently uses sampling. His latest album is ‘Foley Room’ and refers to the creative process: the entire CD is recorded in a studio that is used for creating special effects. Foley Room is a ecstatic trip into the world of Amon Tobin! The 36-year old DJ is also known as the musician behind the game ‘Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory’.

The Cinematic Orchestra [nu-jazz] is a British collective that combines jazz influences with an electronic sound. Their sound leans close to filmscores and is because of that commonly used as backgroundmusic in series and films. Their last album ‘Ma Fleur’ was succesfull hit in Europe. The band also has an excellent live reputation: their preference for improvisation and sampling is loved by its fans.
