Megafaun.

Wednesday, December 30, 2009

Megafaun is a folkband with members like Brad Cook, Joe Westerlund and Phil Cook originate,  formerly of Amateur Love and DeYarmond Edison, which included Justin Vernon from Bon Iver. They made a brilliant folkalbum, which contains some noise and unconventional folk. A thing we like, espacially when we can go watch them live (for free) at Vooruit in Gent or Depot in Leuven (together with Isbells, €12) in March, 2010. Check out some songs and maybe we see you there!

Megafaun – I Saw Three Ships

Megafaun – The Longest Day

Megafaun – Darkest Hour

Godspeed!

Christmas Blues

Tuesday, December 29, 2009

I made a short list of some tracks from random singer-songwriters.

Peter Doherty - A little death around the eyes
In the mid 2000’s Peter Doherty made with and without Carl Barât some sessions and put them on the internet. Last year his first official solo album got published and the majority of the songs on Grace/Wastelands date from these sessions.
Be sure to check out the wealth of unreleased songs that can be found on the internet. This is the album version of a little death around the eyes.

Elliott Smith - Angel in the snow

Elliott Smith was an American singer-songwriter and musician. At the time of his death he was working on his sixth studio album. From a Basement on the Hill, which was posthumously released, is one of my favourite albums of all time.
Angel in the Snow is from the album New Moon, it contains 24 previously unreleased songs recorded between 1994 and 1997, when Smith recorded his albums Elliott Smith and Either/Or.

John Frusciante - The will to death

John Frusciante  is best known as the (former) guitarist of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but he has also an active solo career. The Will to Death is the sixth studio album by John Frusciante released in 2004.

Johnny Cash - Solitary Man

Johnny Cash made a comback in the early nineties under supervision of producer Rick Ruben. The American Albums are a mix of covers and a few new songs. Solitary Man, a cover from Neil Diamond, is from American III.

Nick Drake - Time Has Told me

Nick Drake was an English singer-songwriter. Although he failed to find a wide audience during his lifetime, Drake’s work has become more and more listened to and respected. Time has told me is from Five Leaves Left, recorded in 1969, the first of the three albums published by Drake. In 1974, Drake died from an overdose of antidepressives. He was 26 years old.

Boogie Terror – Xmas mix.

Which makes them pretty awesome… Check  out their Christmas mixtape:

Top 10 Albums.

Tuesday, December 22, 2009

Time to make a list! Top 10 songs is way to difficult so that top will follow later. Today I’ll post my ALBUMS top 10! Rock, Indie, Electro, Pop, Ska, Punk, Metal… Out of every album released this year (the ones I know and remember, not that much but it’s already difficult enough) I will pick my favourite 10! I know I will forget a lot of albums made this year but the ones I remember are good (or recent). And of course I’ll give you my favourite track from every CD!

10. The XX – self titled.

The XX are probably one of the biggest hypes 2009 has known! Their sad voices – which sound perfect together – put a spell on the listener and the 38 minutes (time the album lasts) are going by really fast. My favourite XX-song isn’t on the album (their remake  from Florence + The Machine) but my other favourite is “Islands”. Which you can find below:

The XX – Islands

9. La Roux – La Roux.

La Roux made some of the best electro-pop tunes this year! We waited a long time for this album, because Quicksand – which she released in 2008 – was in our topplays on itunes for a very long time. And finally the album was there and it was great! Songs like “Bulletproof”, “In for the kill” & “Quicksand” were already leaked but songs like “I’m not your toy” showed us La Roux made an album loaded with hits and great tracks! La Roux is the real Queen of pop 2009 (and not Lady Gaga). My favourite track isn’t Quicksand any more but this one:

La Roux – Bulletproof

8. Passion Pit – Manners.

Passion Pit overwhelmed me at pukkelpop with a great show! Since that show I’ve listened frequently to their debut album and I really love it! The electronic match perfect with the guitars. A great (live) band! My favourite Passion Pit track, is the first song I heard: ‘The Reeling’.

Passion Pit – The Reeling

7. Animal Collective – Merriweather Post Pavillion

Animal Collective brought us a masterpiece in 2009! Being more accessible than the avant-garde materials the band has previously released,  Merriweather Post Pavillion is catchy as hell, with its shimmering electronic synths, harmonies, handclaps and upbeat tribal drums. This is music we really can appreciate.

Animal Collective – My Girls

6. The Big Pink –  A Brief History Of Love.

The Big Pink , another hype in 2009, have earned their place in our top 10 thanks to their really cool songs! Some electronics, some rock guitars and a tight drum form a wall of noise mixed with a voice who reminds me sometimes of Liam Gallagher and sometimes of Pete doherty! 2 Great singers combined in 1 band, who’s singing on top of beautiful layers of rock music, great isn’t it? A lot of favourites on this album but this one is their best:

The Big Pink – Velvet

5. Dirty Projectors – Bitte Orca

Dirty Projectors surprised me once in 2008 with their concert before Explosions in the sky, and they did it again in 2009. But this time with a beautiful album! This bands music is the music that came closest this year to my favourite album made in 2008 (vampire weekend that is!). Pop songs, sometimes weird sounds and rythms but always (almost) perfect and with beautiful high voices. It’s hard to pick a favourite but here it is:

Dirty Projectors – Stillness Is The Move

4. Das Pop – Das pop.

Das Pop released their long-awaited album this year! Hooray for that! And hoorayhooray, it’s full of catchy tracks and perfect popsongs! Their previous released tracks “Fool for love” and “Underground” made me want to have this album so much and when I got it, I had an album full of beautiful and awesome tracks! It’s full of favourites, but this one is the best:

Das Pop – Never Get Enough

3. Absynthe Minded – Absynthe Minded.

Absynthe Minded, my favourite Belgian band, released a new album after a long period! The single “Envoie” is a mega hit in Belgium and the best thing: the album is full of songs like ‘envoie’! All songs are perfect poprocksongs and I love them all very much! A Must-Buy album! Check out my favourite:

Absynthe Minded – Envoie

2. Grizzly Bear – Veckatimest.

Grizzly Bear brought us an album full of perfect songs! Not one song is starting to bore me, even after I listened a million times to this album! A real must-have album! Very difficult to pick the best song, but here it is:

Grizzly Bear – Two Weeks

1. Isbells – Isbells.

My personal favourite: Isbells! They conquered my heart with their beautiful songs! Best (Belgian) album of 2009. Nothing much to say about this, just listen!

Isbells – as long as it takes

That’s it! Hope you agree, if you have another top, leave it in our comments!

Enjoy!
