The Big Asthmatic Kitty Post

Tuesday, June 29, 2010

Hiya Fella’s,

I wanted to tell you about this awesome label called Asthmatic Kitty. It’s Mr. Sufjans Stevens’ very own indie record label and they have signed a lot of (mostly) awesome bands with styles from hip hop to sweet indiepop and so on. There are a lot of free songs on their website and I’ll post some here but there’s a lot more to discover (but don’t get hooked because you should have time enough to check out our blog too of course :) )

1. First things first: The great Sufjan himself of course (someone I shouldn’t introduce)! From his first album A Sun Came, here comes Jason, a great song that’s a little bit edgier, harder than his later work. Here’s the link.

Sufjan Stevens – Jason

2. Don’t know what to say about this guy, he’s called Jookabox and he’s eclectic, crazy, cool, … as hell. His music is a mix of soul, hip hop, indie, pop, rock and so on but we don’t care as long as he makes great shit… and that friends, is what he does. So here are two tracks for you to enjoy.

Jookabox – The Girl Ain’t Preggers

Jookabox – You Cried Me

3. This is music your grandma could listen to too, and I don’t mean this in a bad way. It’ sweet, it’s naïve, it’s produced by Sufjan and it’s a bit lithurgical and it’s called The Welcome Wagon. I know this all seems a little weird but they have some nice songs. Check it out and see if you like it or not…

Welcome Wagon – Sold! To The Nice Rich Man!

4. This is a little bit different too: Osso is a modernist string quartet that starred in the song Diamonds For Sierra Leone from Kanye – yo, imma let you finish, but… – West and worked together with other artists like: The National, Jay-Z, The Polyphonic Spree,… . Last year they reworked Sufjan’s second album called: Enjoy Your Rabbit, which was filled with weird electronical instrumental pieces of art… This is a song that was on the rework from that album. For your consideration:

Osso – Run Rabbit Run

5. DM Stith is also really cool. It’s darker and more melancholic than the links above but it’s still great music, I like it the most when I come home from an awesome party and I just want to chill out and listen to something beautiful , but you can listen to it on other ocasions too of course :)  . Here’s a link to one of his songs:

DM Stith – BMB

6. And last but not least, something funny to dance on from a guy called Rafter. I only recently discovered this and I have to say if I would hear this on the dancefloor my feet wouldn’t stop moving. So here you are:

Rafter – Fruit (remix)

Like I said there’s a lot more to discover but this should keep give you a nice impression of what Astmatic Kitty is.

Enjoy,

Cannibal EP.

Monday, June 28, 2010

DJVC is back and this time he’s serious about giving you the best het got. With a free EP he’s giving us some very thight and kick-ass tunes. We already knew the tracks “Italian Stalion” and “Mr. Agressive” but now we got 2 more great tracks! First one is “Cannibal”, a dark (kinda) drum & bass track. Second one is called “Italian Stalion” and gives you some great dubstep. Third one is my favourite from this Ep. “The Ranger” has a kind of experimental beat in the beginning and after a while gets harder and harder and turns into an explosive dubstep track. Great stuff! To close of this nice EP, we get the very cool drum & bass track “Mr. Agressive” which is really good and reminds me of Dirtyphonics! This dude has to keep up the great work, we’re loving his style! Get it here:

Summervibes.

Saturday, June 26, 2010

Vacation is almost starting for everybody here, so that’s why I made this post full of summerish music to kick back and relax in the sun. Inspired on the new mixtape by Aeroplane, it’s time to start the summer here:

Space – Deliverance (Justus Khoncke Wild Pitch Mix)

A track from the laidback june mix by Aeroplane, you can know this song equals summer without even listening to it. But I suggest you do so, because this one is really nice.

Michael Jackson – Man In the Mirror (Das Glow Remix)

Another laidback remix right here. Das Glow dares to makes crazy and experimental tracks but this one isn’t. It just a slightly different version of the track but it’s cool. Check it out, he offers it for free on his twitter!

DiskJokke – 1987

Lovely soft beats with some laidback summertunes and synths. Lovely to hear when chilling in a hammock. Downloadable for free thanks to RCRD LB.com!

Ali Love – Smoke & Mirrors (Bottin Remix)

Some disco-ish summermusic, just have a listen and dance like a summermofo, backstroke style!

Monarchy – Love Get Out Of My Way (Tim Goldsworthy Remix)

The best song of this post, loving Monarchy and loving even more this great remix! Have a listen, catchy as hell!

Disco Trash Music.

Thursday, June 24, 2010

Disco Trash Music are back with a new banger! On Kiez Beats, their Ep ‘Grand Slam’ hits you in the face like Mohammed Ali. The original track is a dirty fidget bomb with some raving synths which remind me of the Bloody Beetroots. Together with this massive track, a crazy pack of remixes is included in this EP. Sawgood, NAFF & Noize Generation are letting the bass kick heavy. My favourite one is by Sawgood, the track gets even rougher then before, sick! The exclusive Release Date on Beatport is July the 09th. and on all other major webshops July the 23rd. You can preview the Ep on soundcloud and even download one of the remixes for free!

Disco Trash Music – Grand Slam EP

Have fun!

As a bonus we give you a new Don Diablo remix:

PETE LAWRIE – ALL THAT WE KEEP (DON DIABLO REMIX)

School is Cool.

Wednesday, June 23, 2010

School is Cool is a great Belgian rockband. After winning the famous Humo’s Rock Rally, they are now at the top of every rocklist in Belgium (like “de Afrekening”). This success is deservedly, because these guys make some awesome songs! Althought their bandname sucks big time, their style is really great! My favourites are “New Kids In Town” and “Nothing Ever Lasts”. Two great songs, the first one with a real rock n roll caliber, the seconds one has a kind of Orient flavour. We’ll give you one tracks, the others you’ll have to buy when released!

Tomorrow Morning

Tuesday, June 22, 2010

Yep it’s true! EELS is releasing a new album soon as a final piece to the trilogy that started with Hombre Lobo and was followed up by End Times !!! It will have the title Tomorrow Morning and according to Mark E. Everett himself this album is all about redemption, about: “A new beginning and another chance. The blooming of all new possibilities. The hope that was always there coming to fruition.”

Unlike the other darker albums this album will have a warmer, more joyfull electronic sound and people that have already heard the album are saying that this is EELS’s most uplifting, brightest album in his fourteen year career. And if all this wasn’t enough EELS is giving away one song:

EELS – Looking Up

The song is almost Gospel, with a lot of handclaps and a church choir, it’s about being ready to start living life again and it’s indeed very joyfull.

Man I’m psyched about this and I hope you are too!

Enjoy !
